What kind
of mobile phone will I need to use CyberVote ?
Current
mobile phones have a certain degree of support for cryptographic protocols.
For example, in the near future, WAP phones
(phones capable of supporting the Wireless Application Protocol)
will have WIM (wireless identity module) cards that can be used for secure
communication, and digital signatures. But the level of security required
by electronic voting systems is not provided by off-the-shelf cryptography
support available on these phones. It is
necessary to develop and install new
cryptographic software for the CyberVote client.
For this reason,
portable CyberVote client software is expected to be available
on PDA (personal digital assistant) and/or smartphone class
devices that support the development and installation of new
software (e.g., the new Nokia 9210 communicator). PDAs can be used in
conjunction with any phone supporting the
internet protocols. Internet-capable smartphones can be used by
themselves.

How will you authenticate the voter
when he/she use a mobile phone ?
Voter authentication in
CyberVote will be based on digital signatures. This will be done either by
having the signing key available on
the mobile phone device, or by using an external token
such as a WIM card. In the former case, the mobile phone device
functions as a personal trusted device.

How will you ensure the anonymity
of my vote if I cast it from my
mobile phone? Will an anonymous channel be in place to cast my vote from
my mobile phone ?
In CyberVote, voter
anonymity will be addressed in the same way, regardless
of the type of device (fixed or mobile) on which the client
is implemented.

What is WAP and WIM?
WAP stands for
Wireless Application Protocol. It is a suite of protocols
to enable efficient access to the Internet from cellular phone devices.
WIM stands for Wireless Identity Module.
It is a hardware token intended for use with WAP. WIM cards
include support for standard cryptographic algorithms used to
implement secure communication and digital signatures. It may
be possible to use WIM digital signatures also in non-WAP applications.
